Crafting the Perfect 'Pop' Rugby Sweater: Edie Eckman’s Expertise and Pop Art Inspiration

Crafting the Perfect 'Pop' Rugby Sweater: Edie Eckman’s Expertise and Pop Art Inspiration

Edie Eckman designed our “pop” Rugby sweater pullover and created the comprehensive tutorial that accompanies the knit pattern. Knitters love it.

We met at a trade show in February 2020, just before the pandemic shutdown. It turns out she lives within driving distance from our mountain town, Lewisburg WV. She and her husband were visiting the area and stopped by the fiber arts studio where a lot of our creations get hatched.

Just in our short visit, she gave us some really great pointers, including recommendations for camera equipment to film tutorials, as well showing us how to take shots of yarn colors using the black & white (gray scale) phone setting to help determine the color values, insuring good tonal contrast in colorwork.

Donna Myles, our in-house crochet designer, has taken Edie’s “Math for Crocheters” on-line class. She liked her teaching style and the class helped her with calculations of the stitches and measurements on her crochet designs.

Professional crafters like Edie have helped us elevate our U.S. Organic Cotton through superb designs, accompanied with clear and helpful knitting tutorials that guide knitters through the sweater making process.

The bright colors of the sweaters and our photo styling were inspired by pop art of the 60’s, specifically the work of Sister Corita Kent. Sister Corita was a nun who taught art at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angles, California from 1948 to 1970. She pioneered an original method of serigraphy, or screen printing, and inspired by pop art at the time, made prints with bold images from consumer and popular culture and juxtaposed it with sacred and secular text, with a call for social justice.

Love is a reoccurring theme—she designed the “Love” pop art stamp that sold millions. Her work is now in art museums worldwide, including an art center dedicated to preserving and promoting her legacy, the Corita Art Center in LA.
