Celebrating Shaniko Wool: A Sustainable Journey with Jeanne Carver

Celebrating Shaniko Wool: A Sustainable Journey with Jeanne Carver

We are so proud to be marketing Shaniko wool

The three requirements we have for choosing a yarn is it needs to be baby friendly, environmentally sound and sourced in the U.S. We were so elated when we found Shaniko’s washable wool as it sings all three! Our knitters and crocheters just love working with it, so soft and easy-care.

A fringe benefit of buying the wool is getting to know Jeanne Carver, the visionary behind the Shaniko Wool Company. Here we are together at H+H Americas where we presented on a panel about sustainable fiber. There is no greater advocate then Jeanne!

I was thrilled to learn that there is a documentary in the works about her mission to raise sustainable, carbon-capture wool that is marketed into the textile supply chain. It is being produced by the award-winning film company, Story Gorge, and financially supported by the Robert Redford Center.

In Their words, "The film we are working on is about Jeanne and the regenerative practices she champions in the wool industry. The logline for the film is: "In the twilight of her career, Jeanne Carver battles to rescue the American wool industry and rejuvenate the land it relies upon. With unyielding determination, she confronts the persistent inertia of consumer attitudes and habits that threaten to keep progress at bay."

Sean, the founder of Story Corp, interviewed and filmed Jeanne and I discussing the designs we created using her wool and the value we see for our knitters and crocheters who use it. We met at the H+H America’s 2024 show, where we were presenting our new baby blanket, Lambkins, using Shaniko wool.

It is now available as a kit. Plus, we designed a coordinating baby hat & mittens set for a quick baby shower gift.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for the release of the documentary on Jeanne and the Shaniko Wool Company and will be sure to let you know.
